Swine Flu (Pandemic Preparedness) Hints

No business is immune to the potential devastation of a mass pandemic influenza outbreak. The most important factor for business survival in such an event is preparedness.
A pandemic situation is like no other disaster that a company will face. Employee absenteeism, supply chain issues and potential governmental actions can be devastating to a company's operations. The ability to respond quickly and adapt to the impact of a pandemic will be crucial to a company's ability to survive. If a company does not have a plan in place already, it is not too late to take action.
At a high level, companies should consider the following actions prior to or during an epidemic or pandemic situation:

Planning
- Having a plan that addresses most of the expected problems a business may face will not only increase the likelihood of the business' survival, but also protect the health and welfare of its employees. Having response and communications plans that are understood by management and the employees at the earliest possible phase is essential.

Communications
- Communicate early and often with your employees and contractors to keep them apprised of the situation. Establish "hotlines" to allow employees to get critical information. Define a communications plan that provides employer / employee communications capabilities if there was a high rate of absenteeism.

Manpower
- Develop depth at key business function positions to mitigate absenteeism issues. Work with Human Resources to establish policies that allow employees or consultants to work from home if they or their family members are showing symptoms of influenza.

Pandemic Awareness

  • Promote personal hygiene and social distancing practices with your staff.
  • Avoid crowded public gathering areas as much as possible
  • Be aware of people that may be sick near you, and maintain a safe distance
  • Avoid sharing items with people that may be sick
  • Avoid the practice of shaking hands when greeting someone
  • Employees that may feel sick should stay at home and seek medical attention
  • Remind employees to wash their hands regularly and promote the regular use of hand sanitizer

Travel
- Limit or suspend travel. Promote the use of video or teleconferences instead.

Supply Chain
- Maintain contact with your suppliers and mitigate any potential supply issues.

Remote Access
- Ensure that your critical staff has the ability to work from home or another offsite location if needed.
